  • The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel that was written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood in 1985 yet the feelings of the novel feel prevalent more today than ever. The story follows Offred, a handmaid in the new Republic of Gilead. Offred is part of a class of women called the handmaids and their sole purpose in the society is to conceive and bear children for the families. Dressed in red, these women are separated from the other women who wear blue or green. Women’s civil rights were quickly taken away in the overthrow of the government. Rights like equality, sexual reproduction rights and general human rights were deemed punishable by the men of the society.
  • If Beale Street Could Talk is a 1974 novel by American writer James Baldwin. His fifth novel, it is a love story set in Harlem in the early 1970s. The title is a reference to the 1916 W.C. Handy blues song “Beale Street Blues”, named after Beale Street in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad.

  • The Woman in the Window is a thrilling slice of contemporary noir peppered with more than a twist of Hitchockian suspense and deftly handled misdirection, with twists that you won’t see coming. Anna Fox spends her day drinking wine, watching old movies, and spying on her neighbors. But when she sees something she shouldn’t, Anna’s world begins to crumble.
  • The Outsider is a horror novel by American author Stephen King. An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad. As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.
